Pisang Keju Coklat (Banana with Cheese and Chocolate) is an easy Indonesian dessert which requires no baking. This dessert is normally sold by street vendors. This is one of my favorite dessert because it is so easy to make and delicious. It takes less than 10 min to make and requires only 4 main ingredients. The only preparation that needs to be done is to peel off the skin of banana, slice it lengthwise, and slightly flatten it. You probably have had chocolate covered banana or banana drizzled with chocolate syrup before. If so, you know how delicious it is. Chocolate and banana are the perfect pairing but you may not know that cheddar cheese on banana and chocolate takes it to another level. The cheese adds the savory flavor to the otherwise sweet dessert. You can drizzle it with condensed milk or chocolate syrup. I like condensed milk on it.
The recipe serves for 2 people.
Ingredients:
- 2 bananas. Make sure you get bananas that still have some green colors on the skin. If you use bananas that are all yellow, they will be soft and more difficult to handle during slicing and cooking.
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese or to taste. You could use sharp or medium cheddar cheese.
- chocolate sprinkles
- Optional: chocolate syrup
- Optional: condensed milk
Methods:
- Peel off the skin of the banana. Cut it in half lengthwise. I prefer not to slice it because it makes it easier to handle during cooking; however, sliced banana is sweeter because the sliced side gets to caramelize during cooking making it taste sweeter. Gently flatten the unsliced side of the banana so that it will be brown during cooking.
- Turn on the stove to medium heat. Put the butter on a pan and melt it. As soon as it is melted, take the pan off the stove and swirl the butter on the pan so that it coats the pan evenly. Alternatively, you can use a brush to evenly coat the pan with the butter. Coating the pan evenly will prevent the banana from sticking during cooking.
- Place 2 slices of banana on the pan. Make sure you don't overcrowd the pan so that it will be easier to flip them during cooking. Once they are brown on the bottom side, flip them and cook them until they are brown. Remove the pan from the stove. Remove the slices of banana from the pan and place them on a plate. Place shredded cheese on top of each slice and top it with chocolate sprinkles. Place the pan back on the stove. Repeat the step for the remaining 2 slices of banana.
- Serve it while it is still warm. If preferred, you can drizzle the top with condensed milk or chocolate syrup.
