Es Teler (Indonesian Iced Mixed Fruit Drink)

Es Teler (Indonesian Iced Mixed Fruit Drink) is one of Indonesian drinks. This is one of my favorite Indonesian drinks because of the fruits served in it. I like the avocado, jackfruit, and coconut in it because they complement each other. To Westerners, this drink might be best served as a dessert. However, in Indonesia, this is considered as a drink because it is hot and humid and this drink cools you down. Because it is considered as a drink, if you order it in restaurants, it is served along with your meals rather than at the end of your meal. A spoon is provided to scoop the fruits.

In Indonesia, it can be served with crushed ice but it can also be served with shaved ice instead. In my recipe, I use crushed ice. However, if you like it with shaved ice which I think is the best, you can put the crushed ice in a blender. Once the ice has completely broken down, spoon it, shape it like a cone, and place it in an individual bowl. Ladle the drink and place it around the cone. Drizzle the top with sweetened condensed milk.

Traditionally, the drink uses cocopandan syrup. However, it is difficult to find it outside Indonesia. So, I just use the reserved syrup from the can of palm's seed. When I am not in a rush, I make my own syrup by mixing equal amount of water and sugar and boiling it until the sugar is completely dissolved. I also add a drop or 2 of vanilla essence for flavor. I personally like it better than the reserved syrup from the can.

It is traditionally served with avocado, coconut meat, pineapple, and palm's seed. However, you can use other fruits and jelly or jello. In Indonesia, people sometimes add jelly from Agar-agar into the drink. Once the jelly is set, cut it into bite size cubes and add it into the drink. This adds texture. So, if you cannot find some of the ingredients in your Asian stores, you can substitute with other fruits, such as melon balls, cantaloupe balls, etc.

The recipe serves 3-4 people.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of jackfruit. Make sure you get the yelow (ripe) jackfruit instead of the green (young) jackfruit. Green jackfruit is used for cooking while the ripe or yellow jackfruit is used in drinks and desserts. If you have access to fresh ripe jackfruit, you may use it instead.
  • 1 can of young coconut meat. You can find it in Asian store. If you have access to fresh young coconut, you may use it instead.
  • 2 avocados
  • 1 can of Palm's Seeds (Attap) in Heavy Syrup. You can find it in Asian store.
  • 1 can of sliced Toddy Palm Seed. You can find it in Asian store.
  • 2 to 3 cups crushed ice or more
  • sweetened condensed milk

Methods:

  1. Drain the can of jackfruit. Slice it lengthwise. Add it into a big bowl.
  2. Drain the can of young coconut meat. Slice the coconut meat lengthwise. Add it into the bowl.
  3. Drain the palm's seed but reserve the syrup. Add the palm's seed into the bowl.
  4. Drain the sliced toddy palm seed but reserve the syrup. Add the toddy palm seed into the bowl.
  5. Cut the avocado in half, remove the seed, and slice it into bite side. Scoop the avocado into the bowl. Repeat this step with the remaining avocado.
  6. Add 1 cup of the reserved syrup into the bowl. Stir to mix.
  7. Add crushed ice into the bowl which will cool down the drink. Taste it and add more reserved syrup if needed. However, if it is too sweet for you, add little bit of cold water into the bowl. Ladle the fruits and crushed ice into an individual bowl or glass. Drizzle with a little bit of sweetened condensed milk on top. You can add more sweetened condensed milk if you have sweet tooth. Serve it right away.

Notes:

  • If you like to serve the drink with shaved ice rather than crushed ice, you can put the crushed ice in a blender. Once the ice has completely broken down, spoon it, shape it like a cone, and place it in an individual bowl. Ladle the drink and place it around the cone. Drizzle the top with sweetened condensed milk.
  • Instead of using the reserved syrup from the can of palm's seed, you can make your own syrup. To make it, mix equal amount of water and sugar and boil it until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add a drop or 2 of vanilla essence for flavor.
