Cumi Pedas (Spicy Squid)

Cumi Pedas (Spicy Squid) is so easy to make and a 1-pot meal. I make it mild, so adjust the heat by changing the quantity of sambal oelek used. If you can find red chili peppers in Asian stores, you may use them instead. You can use food processor to process shallot, garlic, ginger, and sambal oelek. However, I like the texture of shallot in this dish and thus, I decided to thinly slice the shallot instead. Instead of using squid, you may use shrimp or fish fillet.

This recipe serves 3-4 people.


  • 1 lb squid, cleaned and rinsed under water and sliced into ring
  • juice from 1 lime
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 small or 1 large size shallot, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, finely minced
  • 1/4" fresh ginger, peeled and minced
  • 1 tablespoon sambal oelek or to taste. If you can find red chili peppers, you may use them instead. Use 3 or more red chilli peppers depending on your tolerance to heat.
  • 1 Roma tomato or small tomato, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • pinch of black pepper or to taste
  • water


  1. Marinate the squid in lime juice for 15 min. Rinse the squid with water.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil on a pan over medium high heat. Once the oil is hot, add shallot, garlic, ginger, and sambal oelek into the pan. Saute until it becomes fragrant and the shallot becomes soft. Add squid, tomato, and red bell pepper. Stir fry until squid is fully cooked. Add salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons water. Stir to mix. Taste it and add more seasoning if needed. Remove from the heat.
  3. Serve with rice.
